Well, this will be our first week participating in weekly extra credit blogging. Most weeks, you will be asked to read an article or watch a video clip online about some major event or issue effecting Americans. This week, we are going to take it easy and work through some of the technological ins and outs of blogging. Our topic for this week is THANKSGIVING!
I am VERY excited about this Thanksgiving because my family is staying here in Ohio. In the past we have traveled to either Georgia or Indiana to visit with family members. Ever since my sister and I have grown up and moved out of Mom and Dad's house, it is difficult to pack up and leave home during this busy time. I'm excited to spend a relaxing day at my parent's home playing games, watching movies, and, of course, eating lots and lots of food. It is MY job to make the PARTY POTATOES, which I have affectionately dubbed "Heart Attack In A Pan." (If you want the recipe, I can give it to you!) Honestly, though, I am most looking forward to shopping on BLACK FRIDAY! This is an "American Tradition" I haven't had the opportunity to take part in because of our traveling schedule in the past. I truly am looking forward to getting up really early in the morning, putting on my sweats, and shopping until I collapse.
This time of the year seems to kick off the holiday spirit in many of us. I'm anxious to know what your Thanksgiving traditions are with your family and friends. Are you like me... you really dislike Thanksgiving food so your mom makes special dishes just for you!?! Or are you like most Americans who could eat turkey and stuffing for the rest of your life!?! Add a post to share with your classmates (and Mr. Zeller and I!) what Thanksgiving is like for you. Do you look forward to it, or is it just another "Hallmark Holiday?" Have fun with our first extra credit blogging topic!

Hello everyone!
ReplyDeleteThank you for letting me be a part of your blog. My name is Angie - I am Mrs. Williams' Mom.
Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays! My responsiblility for our Thanksgiving dinner is the turkey, ham and dressing. We only have five people at our thanksgiving table but I want to make sure that everyone has their favorite foods. My favorite is the dresssing!
The entire family is involved in preparing the food and setting the table. Everyone has a job!
My favorite Thanksgiving tradition happens as we are eatting our meal. We all take turns saying what we are thankful for. This year I am thankful for my health and the health of my family. We have two older dogs (Sam and Cutter) and I am thankful that they are doing well and are a part of our family!
How about you? What are you thankful for?
For thanksgiving we don't really have any traditions we just eat food and watch football. If any thats our only tradition is watching football. We practice it ofcourse by eating a lot of food and kicking back.
ReplyDeleteThe family tradition we have is we travel around and visit other family and eat food. Sometimes we watch movies and we spend time we each other and talk and catch up. Then we go off and go to the other dinner parties we have to attend.
ReplyDeletemy family tradition is that we stay home and spend all day together and eat our amazingly good dinner. we all usually take a nap because we are so full lol :) but after that we start to watch christmas movies i love thanksgiving. i love spending time with my wonderful family.
ReplyDeleteMy Familys tradition is we have two thanksgivings. My familly is split in two on side likes OSU and the other likes Michigan. The Weekend before Thanksgiving the day ofOSU v.s. Michigan my Moms side ges together and we eat a bunch of food and watch the game.On Thanksgiving day we get together with my Dads side of the family and they live everywere around Ohio its pretty much like a giant family get together will a alot of home made food.
ReplyDeleteMy family's tradition for Thanksgiving, we watch football all day. My family doesn't eat Thanksgiving dinner until 11:00 PM. We also have this weird tradition at Thanksgiving. My family helps put up Christmas decorations after everyone is done eating. Well this year I am cooking Thanksgiving dinner for my family.
ReplyDeleteYour Thanksgiving sounds like its going to be pretty fun. I hope that you don't get trampled during the Black Friday sales.
ReplyDeleteumm well we just have a good time and eat lots of food and sleep and i like to mess with my little cuzns and play with them and watch movies adn sleep after eating so much i cant move from the table... lol but this year im staying home and my mamaw is in florida so my papaw and i are going to my aunts house i think and i have a friend who is lk my sister and she is going to be home alone wiht nothing for thanks giving so im gunna kidnap her and bring her with me, well its not really kidnapping bc shes 18 but still thats besides the point.. i dont want her to be alone adn its not right that she will be. but thats my thanks giving, and on black friday i will be working... yeay me!! not.. but i hope i make good money im doing carryout.. anyhoo, i dont really have a traditon its just about being with family.
ReplyDeleteI love thanksgiving! One of my favorite traditions is watching the Thanksgiving Day parade. As I get older the parade itself gets less exciting, but somehow it just makes it feel more like thanksgiving when I get to watch the parade so I still like it. And then there’s the food. I really, really love food! Haha My grandma makes this casserole with vegetables and cheese and stuff and I have literally been craving it for a couple weeks now from just thinking about thanksgiving. I usually make pumpkin pies, because my grandpa says mine are his favorite. And my grandma also makes amazing mashed potatoes! But my favorite part of Thanksgiving is getting to just relax and spend time with family, especially relatives you don’t get to see on a regular basis. Family is really important to me and I’ve been busier than I’ve ever been this year and haven’t been able to see my family. So I’m really looking forward to seeing everybody. I’m also going to my boyfriends for his thanksgiving and meeting his extended family. So that’s exciting.
ReplyDeleteI thought the video was interesting. I completely expected people to cut back on spending with the economic crisis, but I WAS surprised that the video said that 73% are going to spend less! That is an impressive statistic! But it’s a good thing I guess. Hopefully people will realize getting/getting lots of “stuff” is not worth going into debt by spending money they do not actually have.
Many families are having to cut back or rely on other extended family for their thanks giving meal this year. I read a story about how a family doesn’t have a dining room table to eat theirs on because they sold a bunch of their furniture on craigslist just to pay their mortgage. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/27791739/
I really don't have a tradition its just a normal thing like we eat the thanksgiving dinner around noon. Then we watch the football game. This year I'm going to West Virginia for thanksgiving with my aunt and uncle. I really don't have much to say because my family doesn't really get into thanksgiving that much.
ReplyDeleteThanksgiving is great it's my favorite holiday. I wake up early and go hunting with my dad then come in and start deep frying the turkey. We usually kill a deer too so we start cleaning the deer while the turkey is cooking then the family comes over and we all just hangout that's why i like Thanksgiving!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeletethanksgiving is one of the best holidays. i love getting together with my family and eating great food. One of our traditions is getting together at my aunt sherlys house and eating and watching football. sometimes we shoot guns and we talk and catch up on things. i love thanksgiving al the great food and theres no better feeling of being with your family other than spending time with them at thanksgiving!
ReplyDeleteI am so excited for Thanksgiving!! This is my sons first one and it is going to be amazing! My aunt from Florida is coming up to finally meet he great nephew!
ReplyDeleteThe thing i love most about Thanksgiving is eating the food! We don't eat traditional food. We eat things like stuffed mushrooms, shrimp cocktail, stake bites, scallops, and all kinds of food. My mom eats the crazy food at her house and my dad has the traditional food at his so i get the best of both worlds!!! lol
I am looking forward to Black Friday the most...I love to shop. It is going to be awesome getting up at 4 in the morning to go shop!!! lol
We really don't have traditions we just go with the flow in my family. We do say one thing we are thankful for and they boys go hunting but thats really about it.
Around thanksgiving i can really feel how people start to connect. you can just feel that people get closer to their family and friends. i think since it is around the time of giving that it sparks an interest deep inside people and lets them know that the holidays will be o.k because they have family to look upon and lean on. i love thanksgiving because of this feeling. but sometimes its like I'm the only one that can notices it. I also love the parades that towns have. you can watch them on local news channels of maybe CNN. me and my family watches them on channel 2
ReplyDeleteAs a matter of fact just this morning me and my mother were talking about what to cook. i told her she has to make some of her famous noodles which are amazing. And of course cheese ball :) We always have my family come to my house for thanksgiving, some from my mom side and some from my dads. Thankfully they all live close so nobody really has to travel far to see us.
There are website to this amazing food that my mother makes. ill give you the link!
http://www.hellmanns.us/
huggeyboy92, its is awesome that u and your dad does that. My dad is to lazy to to that and if he does do it its without me! And i never been hunting so i kinda wanna go.
ReplyDeletedeep fried turkey? that has to taste just like chicken i might have to try that just a little. its definitely sounds interesting. I wonder how many of bizarre and different food you also eat during thanks giving.
We really don't have any traditions for Thanksgiving, we just eat the food and take a nap and watch football, nobody comes over for thanksgiving anymore.
ReplyDeletethis thanksgiving is going to be a lot different. my mom is going out of town and i am going to my fiances dads house for thanksgiving dinner. But not on thursday were going on Saturday because everyone has to work during the week. I will be making veggie dip that was my grandmas recipe. i make it on every holiday. this will be the first year that i wont be spending thanksgiving with my hole family. I never participate in black friday i just really dont feel like getting up that early and fighting people for christmas presents =)
ReplyDeleteAlso like jill this will be my daughters first thanksgiving and i am very excited.
ReplyDeleteMy family tradition is that the day before thanksgiving we cook the little stuff like I make my YUMMY Reese cup peanut butter pie. IT'S AMAZING and then the next day we wake up early and me my mom and my little sister stay up all day cleaning and cooking. My mom puts the stuff she's suppose to bake in first and lets it bake and then puts the turkey in the oven. Then we clean and make the house all nice before company comes over and eats with us. Then after were all done eating we take naps because were all so tired and watch the football game. During the football game my mom makes her AMAZING chili cheese dip and we eat that while watching the game. And then after that we just chill. I LOVE THANKSGIVING!!
ReplyDeleteBkeiter... ain't so exciting you have a little one of your own to watch grow up?.... he will be 6 months on thanksgiving...how old will yours be?
ReplyDeleteAs a "tradition" my family would simply meet up at my grandmothers house. This year, although, is so much different. One, My grandparents signed up to work at a homeless shelter serving dinner to the needy. It's a really generous thing, of course. Secondly, and the most important factor, this is my first year on my own. Having been out of my mothers house basically since April, I don't really have an idea of what I will be doing for the holidays. My mother claims she's having a thanksgiving dinner at her house, but I am not welcome. My fiance's family does nothing but argue with one another, and I'm not on that drama. So this year, I think it will be my fiance and I. Oh, and my dog(: It's not going to be anything special, but just being with him in general is enough.
ReplyDeleteBlack Friday!, That's what I'm most excited for. I know I'm going to be doing tons of shopping super early. I bet that's going to be fun. I was reading an article and the statistics stated that this year will be the most overwhelming. Something about budget cuts, and getting a better deal on items. I know that's why I'll be there.
I never celebrate Thanksgiving with my extended family but always with my immediate family; my parents, my brother, my son, my daughter and her fiance. We always gather at my parent's house, eat way too much, play highly competitive cards and watch a little football. It's low key.
ReplyDeleteRegarding Black Friday, I won't go anywhere near a shopping area on Friday. I do not enjoy shopping and I enjoy large crowds even less. In spite of the weak economy, I saw on MSNBC news this morning, that record crowds are expected to be shopping on Friday. However, it remains to be seen how much actual spending those crowds do.
Football 60, that's awesome that you're going to W. Virginia! I think it's a beautiful state with awesome hiking trails & great hunting and fishing.
Angie, glad you're blogging with us! I'm thankful for much; that my parents are still around and doing reasonably well, that I have a job, that I work with so many awesome people...to name but a few things.
Everyone, enjoy the long holiday weekend and please be safe and get back here to us.
Well thanksgiving used to be my favorite holiday until I got a job two years ago and now every thanksgiving I work. But my family's tradition used to be I would go to my dads thanksgiving morning and eat about 12 then I would go over to my moms and eat bout 2 then I would go to my boyfriends grandmas house at 530 and we would eat their. the only tradition we only kept is every thanksgiving at my moms and dads we would draw names out of a hat to pick who we would by Christmas gifts for. Also I always have the duty of making the Devil eggs and Oreo cream pie. and at my dad I have to entertain the kiddies. but I am thankful for the friend's family and boyfriend that I have they all mean a lot to me and they all make me who I am.I'm not looking forward to thanksgiving since I work that day at a restaurant but I got to do what I have to to make the money that I need to pay for Christmas
ReplyDeleteall you guys thanksgivings sound great! but my thanksgiving is goin the suck turkeys! my sister will not be there nor my brother because they are all goin to their spouses parents for thanksgiving!!!!!!!!!! and that means a small Christmas exchange!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1111
ReplyDeleteAre you confused about exactly how to participate in the extra credit weekly blog? Take a look at Rachel's post above. She did a fabulous job sharing her thoughts, referenced the video posted on the classroom webpage, and found an additional source. Now, to get the 7 points, all she needs to do is respond to another students post!
ReplyDeleteHappy Blogging!
Tabithajackson... That's too bad that you have to work on Thanksgiving, but you know, you just might be pretty busy. There are tons of people who do not care for staying home and cooking a massive meal with dishes to clean afterward. Hope you make lots of money!
ReplyDeleteMy family tradition is that the day before Thanksgiving we go to my aunts and spend the day with which aunt we are at. Then on Thanksgiving my dad, mom, and me start to make dinner at 6:30am. At around 2:30pm my sister Alivea goes in the basement and gets the x-mas tree. Scarlett, Alivea, and me set up and decorate the tree. Supper is normally done around 3:50pm. The food is placed on the bar in between our kitchen and dining room. We have over ten different drinks to choose from. My brothers and sister come to my mom's house and eats with us. Sometimes my aunts and uncles will come to. If we get 1/3 of the family there we go in the back yard and play football and kick ball. After we get done playing we go inside to get warm and have dessert. At around 7pm we bring out the card and dominoes. These game usually last until 2am. I am thankful for the family that adopted me and took me in. i love all 11 of my nieces and nephews. Also my 4 brothers and sisters.
ReplyDeleteFor thanksgiving, my family and I all meet up at my granparents house for thanksgiving dinner. Relatives from here to columbus usually show up and converse. Almost every time my family gets together I find out that i have a new relative, whether it is a new date or a long lost relative. My blog sounds like most of the other students blogs because everyone has something to do with food, obviously. I usually have a blast on thanksgiving because there is always amazing food and great people.
ReplyDeleteFor thanksgiving we don't really have any traditions. Our family just gathers a t someone's house and makes dinner together and we eat and have conversations.
ReplyDeletethis year for thanksgiving my family went to my aunt nancy's house and had dinner and then drew names for our christmas gift exchange. i also got to meet my newest baby cuz. she is three weeks old. so cute! then on saturday we are going to my grandma's house for thanksgiving dinner.
ReplyDeleteIt was nice to see that airfares and hotel prices have gone down this year. it will make is easier for people that travel. www.cnn.com
i think that people are crazy to go out on black friday. shoppers get crazy that day they don't care about common curitsy or respect or any morals. people just want to buy crap. yea there are major deals but is it worth getting trappled over. i don't think so. www.msnbc.com
and to all of the people that don't have any family traditions or even family time on thanksgiving then maybe you can start some of your own. make the dissision to go and see family or make a dinner your self for every one. or maybe even volenteer some where to help less fortunate people have a thanksgiving meal. that is what my aunt did this year. she did not show up at thanksgiving today because she was at a homeless shelter serving food to needy people.
I hope everyone had a fabulous Thanksgiving! Please be sure and check out the blog this Monday for our next topic!
ReplyDeleteJessica Jacobs - I think you made a very nice suggestion to your classmates who do not have a Thanksgiving tradition. Volunteering at a local food pantry or shelter is a great idea! Our lives are what we make of them, to start a tradition now as a teenager and carry it through your entire life is very meaningful. I have really enjoyed reading about all your traditions and plans for the holiday. I am thankful to spend my work day with such wonderful young men and women!
ReplyDeleteFor Thanksgiving in my family we invite the whole family over to my house and cook a big Thanksgiving feast! This year was special tho, my grandpa who hasnt been in my family's lives for almost 15 years has started to come around again. It was so much fun having all the family over again, Thanksgiving and Christmas is the only time of the year when I get to see my cousins and extended family. After we eat the men lol always want to watch football, so while they watch football me, my mom, sisters, aunts, and cousins sit there and talk and laugh so hard my stomach hurts!!
ReplyDeleteMy Family doesn't really do much 4 Thanks giving. My step dad and me normaly spend that hole day in the woods. My mom and brother went 2 Cleveland to my grandparents.
ReplyDeleteMy family celebrated Thanksgiving by going to my aunt's house in Lima, Ohio. Usually my all boy cousins sit in the basement and play x-box. It's fun to watch them together bicker and fight over who should've won that game of Call of Duty. I was reading about the Black Friday shopping and think it's ridiculous that people get up that early. My boyfriend and I tried to go shopping on Friday but it was too crazy for me! Above Megan talks about how they play football on Thanksgiving. I can just picture her taking down her older brothers.
